Monika Aichele is an illustrator, designer, and educator based in Munich and Mainz, Germany.

»For me, illustration has always been ‘The Land of Plenty’: creating images that either contrast with or harmonize with their context, be it a magazine, book, film, comic, poster, campaign, sculpture, explanatory video or a doodle for your loved ones. What matters is an understanding of how these media work, the analysis and comprehension of content, knowledge of cultural contexts, the skillful application of an ever-growing range of tools, and, above all, one’s own art.«

Monika has lived and worked in New York, Barcelona, and Berlin. Her work spans a variety of media, including ink, acrylic and collage and she specializes in screen printing. She illustrates for publications in Europe and the United States such as her series on ‘resilience’ for The New York Times or illustrates books such as Paradise of False Birds by Wolfgang Hildesheimer. With almost two decades of experience Monika teaches Illustration at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz. In Mainz Monika has designed several master’s degree courses in Communication Design that included Illustration with a focus on Experimental Science Communication — have a look at www.oceans-abc.de. Monika is a member of the board of trustees of the Hans-Meid-Foundation which promotes contemporary illustration in Germany and is also a member of the Art Directors Club, Germany.
